The Residency
The Gylsboda Residency will host its inaugural session in fall 2023.
The residency provides space for international artists to work in a contemplative rural environment. Multimedia studio space and materials are supplied in the village arts center. Accomodations are provided in the newly renovated miner's quarters. Pictured here is one of the studio/exhibition spaces accessible for the artists.
The Residence
Artists will live in the oldest house in the village, currently undergoing a full renovation. Completion is slated for spring '23. This house historically served as miner's quarters (for the local diabase mine). It was also the childhood home of Nobel prize winning author Harry Martinson.
The house features 5 apartments which can accomodate 10+ people. Ecological building solutions have been employed throughout including upcycled materials, wood fiber insulation, linseed oil paints, and geothermal heating. The house has 5 bathrooms and 3 kitchens available for artist use. It is located 150 meters from the artist studios and exhibition space.
The Village
Sliperiet Gylsboda
Sliperiet Gylsboda is a non-profit association that promotes and develops the cultural and handicraft traditions of the Gylsboda quarry area. Facilities exist for ceramics, stone work, silversmithing, painting, culinary arts, multimedia work, and exhibitions.
Gylsboda
Gylsboda, historically a bustling village for mining diabase, is undergoing a transformation and establishing itself as a rural hub for culture, art, and nature. The village is home to an art center, an annual festival for arts and culture, a sculpture park, hiking and cycling trails, historic tours, and an active diabase quarry prized by stone artists.
Gylsboda Stenbrott
The now-defunct diabase quarry serves as a recreation hub with swimming, hiking, and a sculpture park surrounding it. A community sauna will be installed fall 23'.
Village Art
Gylsboda has a rich art history for a small village. It served as the childhood home of Nobel prize winning author Harry Martinson, as well as Danish artist Mette Aare, Finnish sculptor Raimo Veranen, and an international stone art symposium in the 70's.
